Annexure 11: IGNOU Programmes

Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT): BIT, of three-year (nine trimesters) duration is open to candidates who have passed the 10+2 examination. The admission is made on the basis of an entrance examination. It is conducted in association with Edexel Foundation (UK), one of the largest awarding bodies from UK and incorporates B TEC (formerly Business and Technology Education Council) and University of London Examination and Assessment Council. Students have three options: (a) get Higher National Certificate at the end of one year; (b) get BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing of Computing and Multimedia on completion of the first five trimesters; (c) get thereafter the BIT degree on completion of the remaining four trimesters. Students with BIT qualification are eligible to enter the second year of the MCA programme.

Advanced Diploma in Information Technology (ADIT) (One Year): The ADIT programme supported by the Department of Electronics (Ministry of Information Technology), it is open to graduates. The admission is based on performance in the entrance examination. On completion of ADIT, students can also enter the second year of the MCA programme.

Certificate in Computing (CIC): The course, which is a sort of adult computer literacy programme, is open to candidates who have passed the 10+2 examination. The minimum duration is six months which may be extended to a maximum period of two years. The CIC is stepping stone for getting admission to BCA course for candidates who have not studied mathematics at the 10+2 level. Such candidates, besides completing CIC course will also be required to do the Preparatory Programme in computing (PPC).

Completion of CIC is also an essential requirement for graduates (without Mathematics at 10+2 level) and BTech/MSc degree holders in non-computer stream seeking admission to MCA programming.

Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA): Entry requirement for the BCA course of three-year duration is a pass in 10+2 examination. As stated earlier, candidates without Mathematics at the 10+2 level must qualify in both CIC and PPC examinations. BCA degree holders are entitled lateral entry to the second year of the MCA course.

Master in Computer Applications (MCA): The MCA programme consists of six semesters. There is no direct admission to the programme, as students after completing the CIC of BCA programme of IGNOU are eligible to move to the stream depending upon their qualifications and performance in the course. However, third semester of the MCA programme is offered by lateral entry, if the candidates passes bachelor’s degree in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 and possess any of the following qualifications: (1) Successful completion of PGDCA or its equivalent course of not less than one year duration from universities or reputed Institutions, (2) Successful completion of “A” level examination of DOEACC, after graduation, (3) Successful completion of Bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications (BCA or BSc with Computer Science as a major subjects) with Mathematics at 10+2 level.

Admission Procedure: The candidates will have to appear for the MCA (First year) December term-end examination conducted by the University, to be pitched at the level of IGNOU’s MCA (First – year) programme. Those who qualify in one sitting in all the six courses (with 40% marks in each) will be eligible for admission to the third semester of MCA course.
