Annexure 13: Be/B.Tech In Chemical Engineering

Note: A joke that did the round among academics in the early 1940s was that chemical engineering is neither chemistry nor engineering! Chemical engineering is indeed an engineering discipline with strong roots in chemistry. Earlier, the term was described as a branch of applied chemistry used for large-scale manufacturing of chemical products. As commercial production of chemical products needed larger equipment and the knowledge of engineering, chemical processes, and relevant principles of physics, the field became a subject of intensive study and research of chemical engineers.

This formed the first real basis for the development of chemical engineering as a distinct and unified discipline. A further evolution took place towards greater emphasis on the scientific and mathematical underpinning of the field. Thus research activities were focussed on such areas as fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, diffusion, chemical reactor engineering, and computer aided design (CAD).

Prof. Hiralal Ray, is considered the father of chemical engineering education in India. The first graduate degree programme was introduced in the College of Engineering and Technology (Jadavpur), the predecessor of the Jadavpur University; established by the National Council Education. As of now, more than 100 engineering and technology institutions offer graduate course in chemical engineering and chemical technology.
