Annexure 2: Programmes of Three Eminent Physical Education Institutes

Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (Gwalior-474002)-The Institute was established in August 1957 as a national college of physical education named after Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and was intended to upgrade status of physical education. It was the first institute in India to have introduced Bachelor’s degree (1957)) and Master’s degree (1963) courses. In 1980, it introduced M.Phil course in the subject, first of its kind in India. In 1982, it was granted autonomous status by Jiwaji University. It has excellent library, laboratory, research, and sports facilities. All students are compulsorily required to reside in hostels. A number of scholarships and freeships are available. The Institute now offers four courses: (i) BPE of three year duration which covers 15 subjects, (2) MPE of two-year duration in which seven subjects are taught. Students are required to write a thesis; (3) M.Phil of one-year; and (4) PhD only for private study.

Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (Thiruvananthapuram-695581) - It was established by Sports Authority of India. It offers four programmes: (1) Bachelor of Physical Education. Duration: Three years. Eligibility: a pass in 10+2 examination or a pass in class 10 examination with CPEd (two-year course). Age: 17-20 years (2) Master of Physical Education. Duration: Two-years. Eligibility: BPEd or BPE with 50% marks. Age: Not less than 19 years (3) PG Diploma in Advanced Physical Education. Duration: One-year. Eligibility: Any degree. Age: Not above 40 years. (4) PG Diploma in Health and Fitness Management. Duration: One-year. Eligibility: BPEd or BPE. Age: Not above 30 years. Preference in admission is given to medal winners in national and inter-university sports competitions. Free lodging is provided to all students.

Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports (New Delhi-110018)-Affiliated to the University of Delhi, it offers three courses: (1) B.Sc (Physical Education of three-year duration. (2) Master of Physical Education and Sports (MPES) of two year duration; and (3) Diploma in Physical Education (DPE).
